Progression of the final idea.

Blurb....

Points for us all to consider and make notes in preparation for our next meeting and for the presentation. This list was formed as a reflection after our tutorial with Sarah.

Key words

Once taken into account what everyone has said, Lesley selected key words in relations to our emotions, colours and visual impressions of our first experiences of Farnham, this is a quantitative extraction of our initial brain storming.

adding to the puzzle

ok guys

I think we can work on the logo and the puzzle idea

According to me the centre round, circle should be used or promoted as the dream UNi of all of us, which should be on the screen before anybody comes for any kind of presentation (only for the paris group). The person should come and tell about the his/her dream UNI and then later on start with the experience. The moment he/she starts his/her experiece the later part of the logo should appeare or lighten up in any form of shape.

I think this would take around 7-8min to an individual to summurize his/her experience.

Hope every one would like the idea.

Navpreet

Identity......... The whole puzzle

Elisa came up with idea of using the uni logo as a visual metaphor, the center being our emotions and the outer being our experiences.

Farnham Photos

Hello Everyone! Here's some photos from my first visit to Farnham. Thought they'd be interesting to share. I didnt take many pictures but these were some things visually that caught my eye upon entering the town. -Kelly

Initial Thinking of idea's.

On suggestion of idea's Tara came up with the idea of using a puzzle as our object, in the sense that the students are all one piece and by piece us together we are a complete force (university). Lesley suggested using the the idea of the logo as the final image of the puzzle.

Once discussed as a group, ideas were in the air in associating the puzzle pieces being the students, and how randomly different they can be, but pieced together we become this uniformed force, the university logo.

Exploring: Emotions and the extra's...........

Elisa - When she was starting the course she felt very nervous, when meeting all the people she was shocked at the numbers, there were so many people and she found it difficult to remember names.

Charlotte - Very mixed feelings through the period of the day, she was not nervous when she was starting, she was very surprised by the amount of people. Was very curious when realising that all the MA's would be put together, not how she imagined it. When hearing breakdown on course she became quite worried at whats ahead but very excited about it all at the same time. Hearing so many good things about Farnham can not wait to get in the role of things.

Tara - Very excited. Never imagined that many students, but was really excited to know that there were so many people with completely different backgrounds. She was feeling a positive nervousness.

Lesley - Felt very relieved to be doing the course. On day of course structure, she kept referring it back to her and how it would all relate. It seemed all very unusual to what she was used to and felt it was introducing new skills. She is still unclear in how some of the structure is going to benefit her.

Kelly - She felt relieved when she came here from LA, she felt relaxed that everything wasn't at such a fast pace. The enrolment felt very strange and how everything was done. The schedule for the course still seems to be very up in the air from what she is used to in LA, everything is very set and structured.

Christos - He felt very positive about everything, in particular the tutors, he didn't get along well with his previous tutor and from first impressions, he seems to like his new tutor a lot better. He feels that the tutors have a great deal of knowledge and background. He didn't really have that many expectations on them.

Mago - He was very nervous but at the same time extremely excited, felt like he was on 'Cloud 9'. He has been looking forward to coming here for quite a while, to him its a dream come true. Wanted to come because of what he had heard about the lecturers, he got a good impression from information he was given and liked the fact that a great deal of the tutors were practitioners and had a great wealth of knowledge.

Daniel - He was excited and nervous, he felt this partly because he didn't know anyone. He hasn't had a year out he came straight from uni. He's used to everything being involved with uni, he said it seems quite different here.

Navpreet - Positive and excited to meet new people and restart education after working as a textile designer in the Punjab, India. Excited to be in England studying and that the educational institute here in Farnham is better than what he experienced in India. He expected the campus, library and facilities to be large and was happy that his expectations were met. He was very impressed by the Craft Study Centre. He has to make a long journey everyday to arrive in Farnham – Hornchurch to here….two and a half hours – so his overall first experiences where more than just Farnham. The way of life is faster paced here than in India. He will move to Farnham soon.

General

The town seemed to be quite noticeable for its cobbles and the quirkiness of it all, it was mentioned that you could imagine 'wellies and Labradors', he seemed to be a quiet village and the locals seemed to like it like that. Impression that was given was that the older generation lived there.
Someone associated the size of the train station was the size of the town, in that you can arrive at a train station and already judge the size of the town itself.

Exploring: Visually

The initial experience of Farnham as a place of learning and a place itself.

Initial Experience -

Charlotte - As Charlotte already came from the UCCA Epsom she couldn't only help but compare everything to Epsom, like most when they go to a new university. One of the first things she noticed was the size of the college, and how much better the resources were. Another thing that seemed to stick in her mind was how the students and the tutors dressed.
She noticed that the tutors seemed to be a bit more professional, but this is only after meeting a few times, most people are more formal.
As for the area, it was nothing new to me as I don't live far. Lots of cobbles though.

Elisa - As studying graphics, noticed straight away how clean and bright the universities website was and how well the logo had been designed and seemed to be quite impressed.

As Elisa is from Thaiwan, the weather was very different from what she is used to. Everything seems to be a lot faster here as well, especially the traffic!

Tara - When first arriving at the uni, Tara could tell straight away from the gallery space and the sculptures that this was a creative uni. She began to piece things together and realised that the town and the university all seemed very business like and professional. Even down to the way the students looked, they seemed to be much more clean cut from what she had known as a student when she did her degree. When she did metal work everyone was known for getting messy and dirty, now its the total opposite.

Lesley - Lesley has many different view from what she has experienced, as she did her foundation, degree and MA in stages. There is a general change in appearance in students, they used to be dressed like Tara said, a bit more scruffy and gradually their appearance has become a lot more neater and tidy, 'clean cut'. As like the university, seemed more geared up for business.

Kelly - Straight away Kelly mentions the pace of the town, the complete opposite to Elisa in fact, she feels that everything is slower, the life, the people and the town. Kelly is from LA, so everything seems very fast pace to her.
In the town she noticed one colour in particular, red, the red bricks and the cobbles. These seem to be quite distinctive within the town itself.

Christos - Farnham was quite different for Christos as his whole life he has lived somewhere by the sea. He had a whole series of idea's of how he thought that Farnham would be, he initally thought that Farnham was closer to him from his uni in Portsmouth. The size of the uni was a real advantage to him. He agreed that the town was not really much to see, although he did notice the building and how old they looked, after further research he found out that a certain designer purposely made them look older than what they really were.

Mago - University seemed smaller to him, but this to him was a merit, the services provided would be much better without so many students. Everything seemed so well organised and business like. The UCCA brand identity was well executed. Noting how well the logo was used in relation to layout, being put in exactly the right places and used where needed. He thought the identity was very cleverly done. He related the place to the logo, how the colour scheme used repetitively gave a sense of uniformity to everything.
The area seemed quite posh, everything seemed to be very upscale especially the cars. Very different nightlife from what he is used to, the town seems to be pretty dead.

Dan - The entrance was very clean, wide glass, he felt it was very welcoming. The building itself was very different, he found it quite difficult to find a few of the rooms, the layout quite difficult to work your way around. It was very business like in presentation although not necessarily the student .

Getting to know everyone.

On our first meeting we decided we wanted to learn more about each other and what MA's we are doing to get in idea of skills. So.....

Daniel - Product Design
Charlotte - Animation
Elisa - Graphic Communication
Tara - Contemporary Crafts, Jewellery
Lesley - Fine Art
Kelly - Fine Art
Christos - Interior Design
Mago - Creative Enterprise
By realising our skills at the beginning it would able us to know the extent that we are able to go on our final object. We decided as a group that weren't going to pick an object until we had explored our options first.

To a New Beginning...

Hi to everyone in the Paris Group on their MA course. To start off I'm Daniel, and I'm on the MA Sustaintable Product Design path. Before this course, I studed Consumer Product Design at the University of Bolton.
I hope to see you all on friday for the meeting so to decuse a theme for the research product. From talking to some of you other day I think we already have a theme in the works so this should be easy. So I'll see you friday and we'll see how this goes.
